Al-Ruwaili: We confirmed the Kingdom's interest in activating the provisions of international humanitarian law
The Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law, represented by its Secretary-General, Counselor Dr. Abdullah bin Mudrik Al-Ruwaili, participated recently in organizing a workshop in Cairo on international humanitarian law, in cooperation with the National Committee on International Humanitarian Law in the Arab Republic of Egypt, and in the presence of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Cairo, and the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, at the Semiramis Hotel in Cairo.
The workshop sessions and contributions were moderated by several judges, university professors, and experts specialized in the organizing bodies, in the presence of the head of the technical secretariat in Egypt, Judge Amal Ammar, members of the technical secretariat, and representatives of the bodies in both the Saudi and Egyptian committees, in addition to members of the judicial bodies and authorities.
This workshop comes within the framework of enhancing cooperation between the committees concerned with international humanitarian law in Arab countries and implementing the Egyptian voluntary pledges at the 33rd International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (2019). The event included topics, most notably: introducing international humanitarian law and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the role and achievements of the two counterpart committees and organizing bodies in spreading and promoting the culture of international humanitarian law, the principles of the use of force in armed conflicts, the role and responsibilities of the legal advisor, mechanisms for reverence of international humanitarian law, the rights and duties of health care workers in international humanitarian law, and other topics.
Counselor Al-Ruwaili said in a press release that the workshop was more than fruitful, and that it was a good opportunity to exchange views, visions and positions on many issues related to international humanitarian law, as well as the role of the Permanent Committee in this regard. He explained that he presented to the participants in the workshop aspects of the tireless efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - through the Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law - to activate the texts of this law and its various articles aimed at reducing conflicts and spreading the culture of peace in a broader and more comprehensive manner, in addition to contributing to reducing conflicts and wars, so that countries can enjoy security, peace and sustainable development.
He pointed out that the efforts of the Permanent Committee are widely welcomed by attendees, members of judicial bodies, law professors, experts and specialists in this field, explaining that the Permanent Committee on International Humanitarian Law in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia pays significant attention to such important events at the Arab and international levels.
