“With 800 trainees…the Course on the Basic Rules of International Humanitarian Law Wraps Up in Tabuk”
The Standing Committee of International Humanitarian Law concluded a “Basic Rules of International Humanitarian Law” training course in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense in Tabuk. The inauguration took place at King Abdulaziz Hall for Cultural Activities, attended by Major General Hussein bin Saeed Al-Qahtani, Commander of the Northwestern Region, and Counselor Abdullah bin Medrek Alrwaily, Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of International Humanitarian Law.
Around 800 military personnel attended the two-day course. Taught by a team of national and international experts in international humanitarian law, the lectures covered various topics, including the origins and principles of international humanitarian law, its significance in times of peace and war, and Saudi Arabia’s active support for these principles. Additionally, the course addressed the practical application of international humanitarian law in conflict zones.
Counselor Abdullah Alrwaily emphasized that the training course integrates theoretical knowledge and practical application to reinforce humanitarian principles in times of conflict. The primary goal is to safeguard the lives and property of civilians and mitigate risks that could result in loss of life. He explained that the course is part of the Standing Committee’s efforts to promote awareness of international humanitarian law and cultivate a culture surrounding it across various sectors. This course underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting initiatives that raise awareness and foster understanding of this law and its regulations, particularly among critical stakeholders like the Ministry of Defense, the founding member of international humanitarian law.
He highlighted the intense dedication of the Standing Committee of International Humanitarian Law to collaborating closely with pertinent national authorities, particularly the Committee’s members. This collaboration aims to strengthen cooperation and underscore the Standing Committee’s backing for comprehensive preventative actions to safeguard civilians in regions experiencing violent conflicts and armed disputes. He reiterated the Standing Committee’s commitment to upholding international obligations and emphasized respect for protecting human life. He added that the Committee’s slogan reads, “Peace or war .. Humanity is the core.”
Counselor Alrwaily concluded that the Standing Committee is highly supported by the wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz - may God protect them. Alrwaily highlighted the Kingdom’s support for initiatives promoting compliance with international humanitarian law in global conflict, recognizing its influential role and international reputation.
